NEW wines for February include a 97 point Shiraz and a first ever vintage from one of the best vineyards in the Yarra Valley.
Tarrahill vineyard produces classic valley varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but receives a lot of attention for the spectacular Shiraz that comes from this ‘valley floor’ grower/producer too. This month we’re very excited to have their 2016 Shiraz—that 97 points, James Halliday wine—on tasting, alongside their 2016 Chardonnay, 2017 Le Batard, (Pinot blend) and their 2016 Le Savant (Cabernet blend; see below).
We’re also thrilled to be the first wine room on the block to get a couple wines from Lone Star Creek vineyard who have been providing grapes to some of the biggest names in the valley for years. Look out for their juice in wines from Innocent Bystander (Brown Brothers), Hoddles Creek (Franco d’Anna) and Journey Wines—to name a few.
On tasting from today we have Lone Star Creek’s very own label wines, starting with a bright and crisp 2018 Sauvignon Blanc and a berry bomb 2017 Pinot Noir.

February wines on tasting at Yarra Valley Cellar Door
Blanc de Blancs 2017, Rob Dolan Wines — $27
Crisp, green apple notes on the nose and palate. Fresh zingy hint of lemon rind, brioche and white peach. 9 months on lees. WINERY FACT: 5 Star Winery Rating from James Halliday (Wine Companion, 2015)
Sauvignon Blanc 2018, Lone Star Creek — $25
Fermented in barrel (Fumé style), matured on lees in seasoned French Bariques (225 litres) with full malo. Passionfruit and melon notes with citrus zip and crispness. Vegan friendly. WINERY FACT: This is the first vintage from Lone Star Creek, made by Franco D’Anna.
Chardonnay 2016, Tarrahill Wines — $30
Beautiful aromas of butterscotch, almond croissant and lemon tart. Palate of white stone fruit, crème brulee, lemon curd and bread and butter pudding. 30% new oak and 100% malolactic fermentation. Vegan friendly. WINERY FACT: 5 Star Winery Rating from James Halliday (Wine Companion, 2017).
Chardonnay 2017, Journey Wines — $38
The elegant yet intense nose has aromas of green apple, lemon tart and grapefruit. The palate is tight and long with white peach on the front-palate balanced by a distinct line of grapefruit acidity. WINERY FACT: winemaker Damian North is a former sommelier whose winemaking career has taken him to Tarrawarra (Yarra Valley), Benton-Lane Winery (Oregon) and Leeuwin Estate (Margaret River).
Gewürztraminer 2018, Lilydale Estate — $35
Aromas of peach, lychee, pears and apple cinnamon spice. A fresh, deep palate of pears, honeydew melon and clove stewed apples. WINERY FACT: The vineyards were established in 1976, making them amongst the oldest in the Yarra Valley.
Rosé 2018, Santolin Wines — $25
Wild fermented Pinot Noir (84%)and Sangiovese (16%). Dry, textural and gently aromatic with wild strawberries, peach and pear notes and a musk-stick finish. No fining (Vegan friendly)
WINERY FACT: this is Santolin’s first rosé with a total production of only 5 barrels (bottled 24 Oct 2017).
Pinot Noir 2017, Lone Star Creek — $30
A well balanced wine with distinctive perfumed MV6 pinot characters of red berries, red plum and a touch of savoury. 15% whole bunch, wild yeast fermentation, open tanks. Vegan friendly. WINERY FACT: Vineyard also provides grapes to Innocent Bystander (Brown Brothers) and Hoddles Creek.
Pinot Noir 2017, Journey Wines — $38
Aromas of red berries, plums and cherries, complemented by forest-floor and subtle oak. Silky tannins lead to a delightfully long finish. 20% whole bunch fermentation. Handpicked fruit from Lone Star Creek – Woori Yallock, Upper Yarra Valley (79%) and Willowlake – Gladysdale, Upper Yarra Valley (21%).
Le Bâtard 2016, Tarrahill Wines — $30
Aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant and cherry ripe. Palate of light Christmas cake and chinese five-spice with a peppery finish. 80% Pinot Noir/20% Shiraz (approx). WINERY FACT: Vineyard is organic and biodynamic in transition. They use no insecticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers
Nero D’Avola/Sangiovese 2018, Ii Capo, Santolin Wines — $30
Aromas of raspberries, plums and violets; earthy palate of black cherries and plumcake. 50% Nero d’Avola/50% Sangiovese. 16 months in oak, some 1yr old barrels. Only 300 dozen produced.
WINERY FACT: this wine is Vegan friendly.
Shiraz 2016, Tarrahill Wines — $45
“Estate-grown, destemmed and crushed, fermented in closed tanks, matured in French oak (30% new) for 12 months. The inky depths of the colour, of the smoking bouquet, the endless layers of the omnibus of black fruits, licorice, the voluminous but soft folds of tannins are exceptional.” James Halliday 97 points.
Le Savant 2016, Tarrahill Wines — $80
Densely packed black fruit flavours and ripe tannins, layers of dark fruit, chocolate and spices. 98% Cabernet Sauvignon/2% Shiraz. Matured in French Oak (25% new) for 12 months. 96pts James Halliday.
