Wines for June including NEW Pinot Noir

Winter is upon us and it’s the perfect time to explore wine in the comfort of your own home. After visiting us first, of course, and picking up a mixed six or so of boutique Yarra Valley delights.

New to the table this month is a smashingly excellent Pinot Noir from Santolin Wines.

Blanc de Blancs 2017, Rob Dolan Wines — $27

Crisp, green apple notes on the nose and palate. Fresh zingy hint of lemon rind, brioche and white peach. 9 months on lees. WINERY FACT: 5 Star Winery Rating from James Halliday (Wine Companion, 2015)

 

Chardonnay 2018, Lillydale Estate — $35

Enticing aromas of nectarine, white peach and apricot danish. Perfectly balanced flavours combining oak (vanilla, crème brulee, dill), stone fruit and lemon zest, orange peel and wet stone. 20% new oak, 5% malo. From 3 blocks; 2 original plantings. WINERY FACT: Vineyard includes Penfold 58 and St Huberts clones.

 

Pinot Grigio, Ingram Road (Helen’s Hill) 2018 — $25

Clean and fresh with a balance of golden delicious apples and nashi pear and clean minerality and acidity. Nuances of rich, textural flavours on the mid palate from an extended cold tank fermentation of over six weeks. WINERY FACT: Winemaker is Scott McCarthy (former Mandala, current Soumah Wines)

 

Gewürztraminer 2018, Lilydale Estate — $35

Aromas of peach, lychee, pears and apple cinnamon spice. A fresh, deep palate of pears, honeydew melon and clove stewed apples. WINERY FACT: The vineyards were established in 1974, making them amongst the oldest in the Yarra Valley.

 

Fumé Blanc 2015, Helen’s Hill — $30

Honeyed apricot texture and a nutty rich finish—think cashews. ‘Evolution’ because it’s handpicked, whole bunch into barrel, barrel ferment and left alone. No stirring. Solids and lees for 16 months in old french barrels (3-5 years oak puncheon—500litre). WINERY FACT: Founded in 1997, built winery in 2004/5, cellar door opened in 2006.

 

Rosé 2018, Santolin Wines — $25

Wild fermented Pinot Noir (84%)and Sangiovese (16%). Dry, textural and gently aromatic with wild strawberries, peach and pear notes and a musk-stick finish. No fining (Vegan friendly). WINERY FACT: this is Santolin’s first rosé with a total production of only 5 barrels (bottled 24 Oct 2017). 

 

Pinot Noir 2016, Santolin Wines — $42

This wine is made from fruit grown on the Willowlake Vineyard in the small village of Gladysdale in the Upper Yarra Valley. 15% whole bunches and 85% whole berries were left to cold soak in an open pot, then left to ferment naturally over a 14 day period with regular hand plunging.

“Estate-grown, destemmed and crushed, fermented in closed tanks, matured in French oak (30% new) for 12 months. The inky depths of the colour, of the smoking bouquet, the endless layers of the omnibus of black fruits, licorice, the voluminous but soft folds of tannins are exceptional.” James Halliday 97 points.

WINERY FACT: winemaker Damian North is a former sommelier whose winemaking career has taken him to Tarrawarra (Yarra Valley), Benton-Lane Winery (Oregon) and Leeuwin Estate (Margaret River).

The 12 wines of March 2019 are each excellent examples of what makes the Yarra Valley such a unique and special wine region.

NEW wines for February

NEW wines for February include a 97 point Shiraz and a first ever vintage from one of the best vineyards in the Yarra Valley.

Tarrahill vineyard produces classic valley varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but receives a lot of attention for the spectacular Shiraz that comes from this ‘valley floor’ grower/producer too. This month we’re very excited to have their 2016 Shiraz—that 97 points, James Halliday wine—on tasting, alongside their 2016 Chardonnay, 2017 Le Batard, (Pinot blend) and their 2016 Le Savant (Cabernet blend; see below).

We’re also thrilled to be the first wine room on the block to get a couple wines from Lone Star Creek vineyard who have been providing grapes to some of the biggest names in the valley for years. Look out for their juice in wines from Innocent Bystander (Brown Brothers), Hoddles Creek (Franco d’Anna) and Journey Wines—to name a few.

On tasting from today we have Lone Star Creek’s very own label wines, starting with a bright and crisp 2018 Sauvignon Blanc and a berry bomb 2017 Pinot Noir.

Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot 2015, Squitchy Lane — $30

Cabernet Sauvignon 62.5%, Cabernet Franc 25 %, Merlot 12.5%. Spicy, red fruits and a waft of mint; medium bodied. Hand-picked, destemmed and crushed to small open fermenters. Fermentation in 7-10 days and individual parcels pressed and matured in barrels for 15 months prior to blending and bottling.

 

Sparkling Tempranillo 2014, Sutherland Estate — $35

Aromas of black cherries, chocolate licorice and spice with an off-dry to sweet palate of ripe summer fruits. Best in Class (2016 Winestate Annual Sparkling Wine Show). WINERY FACT: the vineyard was planted in 1995 with further plantings (Gewürztraminer and Tempranillo) in 2000. 200 metres above sea level.

Aromas of peach, lychee, pears and apple cinnamon spice. A fresh, deep palate of pears, honeydew melon and clove stewed apples. WINERY FACT: The vineyards were established in 1976, making them amongst the oldest in the Yarra Valley.

 

Marsanne 2014, Handpicked Wines — $38

A full-flavoured Rhone-style wine with complex aromas of dried pear, honey and wild flower with a hint of potpourri. The palate is full bodied and textural with spicy, caramelized pear flavours. Nero D’Avola/Sangiovese 2018, Ii Capo, Santolin Wines — $30

Aromas of raspberries, plums and violets; earthy palate of black cherries and plumcake. 50% Nero d’Avola/50% Sangiovese. 16 months in oak, some 1yr old barrels. Only 300 dozen produced.

The elegant yet intense nose has aromas of green apple, lemon tart and grapefruit. The palate is tight and long with white peach on the front-palate balanced by a distinct line of grapefruit acidity. WINERY FACT: winemaker Damian North is a former sommelier whose winemaking career has taken him to Tarrawarra (Yarra Valley), Benton-Lane Winery (Oregon) and Leeuwin Estate (Margaret River).

An intriguing nose of plums, raspberries, aniseed and black pepper spice, supported by a subtle dusting of cinnamon and mocha from quality French oak (matured for 20 months). The palate is round and soft with a creamy mouthfeel on the mid-palate, finishing with sweet, silky tannins and balanced acidity.

Pet Nat is short for Pétillant-naturel which is a wine produced in the méthode ancestrale, an ancient and natural way of making sparkling wines, predating the méthode champenoise. 65% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay. Bone dry. Unfiltered and unfined. No sulphur.

WINERY FACT: Winemaker Dylan McMahon is the grandson of original owner.

Chardonnay (RESERVE) 2016, Seville Estate

Lifted white melon fruits with a citrus and nutty aroma. Noticeable lees contact with background flinty reduction. The palate is complex and nutty with stone fruits and great tight acidity. Long finish. Lees for 10 months. 30% new French oak (300L/500L); no malo fermentation.

Rosé 2017, Squitchy Lane Vineyard

Pinot Noir 95%, Marsanne 5% . Pinot Noir juice and Marsanne skins gives the wine extra body, texture and phenolic depth. Strawberry ice-cream nose. 2017’s long slow ripening period allowed gradual development of complex flavours and retention of good levels of natural acid.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (20%) and Pinot Noir (10%) from the family run vineyard in Silvan (planted in 1999). Aromas of plum-cake, raspberry, blueberry, red-cherry, jaffa cake and cola with medium, soft tannins. Vineyard 250m above sea level. WINERY FACT: First wine produced 2004.

Shiraz 2015, Seville Estate

Ripe black fruits, white pepper and spice. Parcels of whole-bunch, whole-berry and de-stemmed fruit. This wine received 94pts from James Halliday. WINERY FACT: Shiraz vineyard was planted in 1972.

Citrus, brioche, white peach and creamy mouthfeel, with green apple notes and a fresh, vibrant acid and length. WINERY FACT: Rob Dolan’s first release was in 2012 from 2010 vintage.

Viognier 2016, Warramunda Estate
Slaty, steely acid and engaging aromas of red rose, spice, ginger blossom and quince.
Deliciously viscose mouthfeel. WINERY FACT: Warramunda means ‘wait until tomorrow’ in the local Aboriginal language. First vintage from Warramunda was in 2013.
