What’s May’s dozen? Glad you asked.

We have two wines each from six top Yarra Valley wineries on tasting during May which gives a total of twelve different wines to taste on one table.

Yep, we know—that’s nothing to spit at.

To seduce your salivation here’s some notes on each of these beauties.

For your own take, drop by sometime during May ‘cause come June we’ll be switching ‘em up—variety being the spice of wine-life and all that.

Blanc de Blanc 2017, Rob Dolan Wines
Citrus, brioche, white peach and creamy mouthfeel, with green apple notes and a fresh, vibrant acid and length. WINERY FACT: Rob Dolan’s first release was in 2012 from 2010 vintage.

Viognier 2016, Warramunda Estate
Slaty, steely acid and engaging aromas of red rose, spice, ginger blossom and quince.
Deliciously viscose mouthfeel. WINERY FACT: Warramunda means ‘wait until tomorrow’ in the local Aboriginal language. First vintage from Warramunda was in 2013.

Fumé Blanc 2015, Squitchy Lane
Passionfruit, citrus, melon, peach and lime aromas. White nectarine, blood orange and apricot on the palate. WINERY FACT: Owner, Mike Fitzpatrick—who was captain of Carlton Football Club—fell in love with wine while a student at Oxford University, where he lived on ‘Squitchey Lane’.

Chardonnay 2016, Handpicked Wines
Zesty grapefruit pith, white nectarine and grilled nuts with layers of flint and oak complexity; tight acid line that drives the long finish. Whole bunch pressed; wild ferment in barrel. 50% new French oak. Partial malo-lactic fermentation. WINERY FACT: vineyard is 450m above sea level.

Rosé 2017, Squitchy Lane
Perfect summery notes from Cabernet Franc (52%) and Merlot (48%). Peach, rockmelon, honeydew and pineapple aromas; ruby grapefruit and blackberry n’ blueberry compote on palate. WINERY FACT: This wine recently won GOLD at the Yarra Valley Wine Show.

Pinot Noir 2016, Six Acres Wines
Fruit and spice on nose including ripe cranberry, raspberry and forest floor. Delicate yet flavourful. No fining, no filtration and minimal sulphar added. MV6 clone. GOLD at 2017 Yarra Valley Wine Show. WINERY FACT: Vineyard planted in 1999.

Pinot Noir 2016, Seville Estate
Lifted aromas of red berry fruits, spice & a hint of sweet nutty oak. Palate of cherries & strawberries with earthy characters of rhubarb & nutmeg. Whole bunch ferment adds lift, tannins, savoury character & texture. GOLD Melbourne Royal 2017; 94 pts James Halliday. WINERY FACT: original vineyard planted in 1972.

Pinot Noir 2016, Handpicked Wines
“Brilliant clear colour, 100% MV6 clone provides the structure underpinning the red berry and plum fruit of the elegant, yet long and intense, palate. An exceptional outcome for the challenging vintage, helped by the altitude of this Upper Yarra vineyard.” James Halliday, 95pts. WINERY FACT: Winemaker is Peter Dillon

Barbera 2015, Rob Dolan Wines
Aromas of dark berries, plum, blueberry, liqorice, and savoury oak and a palate of soft, fresh red cherry and spice. Hand picked fruit from the Yarraland Vineyard, Chirnside Park. Cellar for 10 years. Winemaking: gently crushed, small ferment for 12 days, direct to 1+2 year old French oak for 12 months. Winemakers: Rob Dolan and Mark Nikolich. WINERY FACT: In 2015 Rob Dolan Wines was awarded the 5 Red Star rating in the James Halliday Wine Companion.

Field Blend 2017, Six Acres Wines
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), Merlot (20%) and Pinot Noir (10%) from the family run vineyard in Silvan (planted in 1999). Aromas of plum-cake, raspberry, blueberry, red-cherry, jaffa cake and cola with medium, soft tannins. WINERY FACT: First wine produced 2004; vineyard 250m above sea level.

Syrah 2016, Liv Zak
Aromas of summer berries, blackcurrant, rose, allspice with a hint of lavender and fresh herbs. Palate of fresh red and black fruits, dusted with wild herbs, black pepper and chocolatey tannins. WINERY FACT: Liv Zak Wines is the ‘daughter’ label of Warramunda Estate.

Shiraz 2015, Seville Estate
Ripe black fruits, white pepper and spice. Parcels of whole-bunch, whole-berry and de-stemmed fruit. WINERY FACT: Winemaker Dylan McMahon is the grandson of original owner. 94pts, James Halliday
